Senior Utilities Mechanical Engineer

Job Summary

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is a seasoned technical contributor, supporting maintenance and operations for the generation and distribution of utilities from a central plant to campus buildings. Develop, maintain, and communicate chilled water, steam, condensate, potable water, and compressed air distribution design standards for Utilities Operations. Provide support and planning for campus utilities systems. Provide professional oversight for in-house utilities design work. Develop, estimate, justify, manage, execute, monitor, and control multiple engineering projects regarding scope, schedule, quality, risk, and budget.


Review and evaluate engineering designs, new products, equipment, services, and technologies.


Provide technical assistance and guidance in problem solving, troubleshooting, and resolutions to problems in support of Heat and Power, Utilities Operations, and other Physical Facilities staff. 


Manage and coordinate stewardship projects in support of Energy & Utilities departments to include system and equipment outages.


Select, procure, and/or approve owner furnished major equipment for utilities-related projects.


Perform thorough investigations of various Power Plant systems, obtain baseline performance data, and determine optimum operating conditions.


Recommend improvements to Wade equipment and operations.


Redline existing drawings and prepare specifications for Power Plant, Physical Plant, and Contractors. 


Contract and communicate with vendors to obtain information and services for Wade Power Plant equipment.


Contribute to utilities master planning and coordination of maintenance, replacement, and expansion of utilities systems. Provide engineering judgment and recommendations.

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field required, Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • Four years of experience in utilities generation and/or distribution 

Skills Needed: 

  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, piping isometrics, and equipment arrangement drawings

What is helpful (Preferred):

  • Registered Professional Engineer 
  • Experience:
    • with utility pressure parts design and/or repair 
    • with sizing, troubleshooting, and commissioning large rotating equipment (e.g., fans, turbines, pumps) 
    • conducting root cause analysis 
    • with ASME Section I, NBIC, and/or ASME B31.1 / B31.3 / B31.8
