Software Engineer

Job Summary

The Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP) at Purdue University facilitates collaboration between the Indiana Department of Transportation, higher education institutions and industry to implement innovations that result in continuous improvement in the planning, design, construction, operation, management and economic efficiency of the Indiana transportation infrastructure. The ideal candidate will develop, test, maintain, and document software systems that support transportation engineering research and implementation. The scope of the research includes, but is not limited to software and database systems upwards of one trillion records relating to traffic signal and freeway management, operations, and control devices, passenger and freight mobility, infrastructure asset management and tracking, connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV), electric vehicles (EV), internet-of-things (IoT), micro-mobility and smart cities.

The software systems developed will enable new technologies and methods to be adopted safely, effectively, and efficiently by transportation agencies, local municipalities, and the private sector. Some field work is required for data collection including the setup, operation, and maintenance of instruments, sensors and equipment.   • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, information technology or related field
  • A minimum of two (2) years of professional software development experience including web development protocols, languages, and platforms
  • Experience with web application development
  • Experience with databases/data pipelines: manipulation, extraction, transformation, or loading
  • SQL scripting
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills



  • Experience with relational database systems, cloud computing, geographic information systems (GIS), big data, embedded computers, mobile device apps/programming, Internet-of-Things (IoT), computer hardware, systems administration, and networking
  • Experience working on transportation-related projects
  • Experience with networking protocols, shell scripting, command-line-based operating systems (OS), embedded devices programming, UNIX systems, MQTT services, Python, D3, React.js. .NET


Additional Information:

  • This position has a limited duration of two (2) years with continuation dependent upon additional grant funding. Benefits do apply
