Job Summary

In support of the Purdue-wide Integrative Data Science Initiative, The Data Science Consultant Service (DSCS) is a professionally contracted service to external/internal organizations with specific goals of increasing efficiencies within their organization.  These jobs have clear goals, timelines, and end-product, and future employers will appreciate this real-world experience on your resume.

As a Consultant, you will be expected to perform up to 20 hours of work within a team of Consultants progressing the work through a scrum-type workflow from your computer.  Progress will be team evaluated in a meeting weekly with an assigned mentor to ensure steady progress is made to produce an end product aligned with the customers’ requirements.  This experience often utilizes the same work computing environment found at the customer’s job site further enhancing the work experience.

The DSCS contracts to solve organizational challenges in a broad set of domains: business analytics; employee and customer retention; production optimization; weather analytics and prediction; scientific image analysis; process optimization; social media analytics and many more.  Companies that manage their Key Performance Indicators (KPI) through Data Science typically see 53% KPI improvements.

Only current Purdue students will be considered and need to apply.  When applying, indicate domain knowledge and experience you possess.  List Data Science skills, programming languages you are familiar with, tools you have used, any experience you have with large datasets, data cleaning, visualization, machine learning, AI techniques/toolsets, app development/environments, or data manipulation experience.  DSCS jobs involve a broad range of Data Science skillsets, and we will apply your skills and interests into teams to perform the jobs at hand.

Students who are just starting in the field; have Data Mine experience, or have taken Data Science courses are encouraged to apply.

Some DSCS contracts have strict “US persons” requirements, and most require the student to sign away their “Intellectual Property” (IP) rights (i.e. the customer owns the work), and all will have specific data handling and access procedures, so be prepared to work within this environment and provide the necessary information if asked.  The number of DSCS contracts in hand at any one time will change, so we cannot guarantee steady employment, however, we will retain your application and staff the DSCS contracts with high-performing consultants to perform the work.

Purdue University is an EOE/AA employer.  All individuals, including minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply.
