Systems Administrator

Job Summary

As a System Administrator, you will be an integral part of our support services team. In this position, you will provide technical leadership, mentoring, and direction for the support services team.  You are primarily responsible for the College of Agriculture (CoA) Windows/Mac desktop environment and the underlying technical resources that support it.  You will research, evaluate, recommend, develop, configure and deploy software and hardware solutions in support of CoA faculty and staff as well as assist in developing and maintaining solutions that support faculty research, education, and outreach. In addition, you will work in a team environment to gather requirements, participate in assessments, reviews, audits, and assist with quality assurance.

Responsibilities:

  • Development, engineering, planning, design, implementation, and problem resolution of the College of Agriculture desktop environment which includes more than 3000 computers and 1500 users
  • Selecting, configuring, deploying, and maintaining AgIT Support Services supporting tools and applications
  • Proactively identify and implement application upgrades and patches while continually monitoring the adoption of those changes for over 3,000 managed devices and adhering to a structured change process
  • Proactively monitor remote network stability and performance to ensure the security and accessibility of supported users and devices.
  • Define and coordinate the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures for tier 2 and tier 3 desktop support.  
  • Develop and enhance documentation that will enable the operational staff in their support responsibilities
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, AgIT staff, customers, vendors, and other IT organizations across the university.
  • Provide technical expertise and assistance for tier 2 or 3 issues  
  • Directly interact with and support end-users
  • Address sensitive requests requiring an elevated level of access to AgIT’s technical infrastructure
  • Provide limited on-call evening and weekend work, travel to remote locations around the State of Indiana
  • Maintain a broad understanding of the technical solutions, technology direction, and trends that you will use to provide recommendations to stabilize and enhance the quality and effectiveness of the College of Agriculture desktop support environment.  Research and develop new technology and engineering best practices, as well as implement complex and comprehensive solutions
  • Provide consultation and assistance to the College of Agriculture, Purdue University faculty and staff, other business units, and external suppliers
  • Acquire knowledge through Professional Development training, conferences, collaboration with peers at Purdue University and other Higher Education facilities, seminars, and other mechanisms

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer technology, computer science, computer engineering or related technical field
  • 2 years of Systems Administrator in a Windows or Mac environment
  • In lieu of degree consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (Associate degree + 4 years of related experience; HS diploma/GED + 6 years of related experience)
  • Experience installing, configuring and troubleshooting Windows/Mac OS devices
  • Available for state-wide (Indiana) travel to remote locations as needed.
  • Experience working with vendor customer support on issue resolution
  • Experience utilizing remote software management at an organizational level
  • Skilled in networking concepts (DNS, DHCP, Cisco Meraki or similar cloud managed devices), Windows printer management services, Windows 10 and above, Windows Server 2012 and above
  • Ability to plan, organize and document complex system design activities and to install, configure and troubleshoot systems to be consistent with university policies/procedures
  • Ability to communicate technical/complex information both verbally and in writing to faculty and staff of various levels of computer knowledge
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively
  • Skilled in effectively communicating technical details and solutions to partners and users of all technical skill levels

Preferred:

  • Experience working at a university or higher education environment
  • Mac OS use and administration
  • Programming or scripting experience (Powershell, Bash, Python, etc.)
  • Creating and maintaining software packages in SCCM using Configuration Manager
  • Creating and maintaining software packages and policies for MacOS in JAMF
