Veterinary Technician/Nurse (Large Animal Medicine)

Job Summary

The Purdue University Large Animal Hospital is hiring two credentialed technicians to join the Internal Medicine team to work closely with the Internists, residents and interns to treat equine, bovine and other farm animal patients. They will be responsible for assisting with a wide variety of procedures associated with both elective and out-patient cases, and intensive care hospitalized patients. The Internal Medicine team is tasked with reception of incoming emergencies, including neonatal, neurologic, acute abdomen and anemic cases. Technicians working within Internal Medicine have the opportunity to learn and perform higher-level technical skills, as well as work with advanced medical technology. They will be responsible for clean and well-stocked examination and treatment rooms. The medicine technicians will participate in an on-call rotation schedule, including some weekends and holidays.


The Veterinary Hospital values credentialed technicians for the skills and knowledge they bring to the hospital, students and patient. All veterinary nurses in the hospital teach and mentor students throughout the year. This posting may be filled at multiple levels (S3 or S4). The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate.


S3 requirements:

  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology

S4 requirements:

  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program
  • Two years of experience as a credentialed veterinary technician


  • Candidates must be registered as veterinary technician in Indiana no later than twelve (12) months after hire date
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Hospital Information Systems)
  • Ability to work under pressure in emergency situations
  • Good oral/written communication skills; ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in a veterinary hospital environment
  • Ability to lift and carry 25-50 pounds frequently and 60 pounds occasionally


  • Experience as a registered veterinary technician in a large animal hospital, veterinary practice or veterinary teaching hospital
  • Large animal experience in a teaching hospital or specialty practice
  • Previous handling in stocksmanship or equestrian work
