Veterinary Technician (Large Animal Treatment Tech)

Job Summary

The Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital is adding talented veterinary technicians to our Large Animal team! As a teaching hospital supporting 15 different veterinary specialty departments, technicians have the opportunity to utilize all of their clinical skills working with a diverse caseload of patients. Purdue University also boasts one of the top Veterinary Technology programs in the country and offers all employed technicians didactic and in-the-moment teaching opportunities with both veterinary and veterinary technology students. All technicians in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital are encouraged to work independently and utilize critical thinking skills to contribute to patient care. Technicians are also supported in working towards their VTS and are mentored through the process.


As a Large Animal Treatment Technician, you will:

  • provide hourly care to hospitalized animals 
  • assist with emergencies
  • provide clinical instruction to veterinary and veterinary technology students as necessary
  • monitor inventory/supplies, order as necessary, keep exam and treatment rooms stocked
  • communicate with clinicians regarding changes in condition of patients
  • perform various record keeping tasks

This posting may be filled at multiple levels (S3 or S4). The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate.


S3 requirements:

  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program


S4 requirements:

  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program
  • Two years of experience as a credentialed veterinary technician


  • Candidates must be registered as veterinary technician in Indiana no later than twelve (12) months after hire date.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Hospital Information Systems)
  • Ability to work under pressure in emergency situations
  • Good oral/written communication skills; ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in a veterinary hospital environment
  • Ability to lift and carry 25-50 pounds frequently and 60 pounds occasionally



  • Experience as a registered veterinary technician in a large animal hospital, veterinary practice, or a veterinary teaching hospital
  • Large animal experience in a teaching hospital or specialty practice


Additional Information:

  • Will rotate night shift, weekend, and day shift duty, and holiday coverage rotation
