Job Summary:

As part of Purdue Engineering’s Administration Communications team, your primary role as a multimedia designer is to support and deliver innovative, strategic content on behalf of the College of Engineering.

You will gain real-world creative experience developing work within our dynamic, cross-functional team. You will be responsible for building communications for the Dean’s Office as well as College of Engineering partners. As a multimedia designer, your primary role will be creating visual content for various projects and platforms (print, web, social media, etc.), while also learning and developing design skills under the guidance of experienced professionals. Although this role’s primary focus is graphic design, you will have the opportunity to specialize in communication strategy, social media content creation, motion/animation, video, print, photography, writing, illustration, web, 3D, interactive and more based on your skill set and interests.

The multimedia position works a weekly minimum of 8 hours and maximum of 15 hours during the fall and spring semesters. Summer hours can be a max of up to 30 hours/week. Class schedule must be provided. Some evenings, weekends and on-call work may be required on occasion, at the discretion of the supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Maintain a U.S. driver's license and reliable transportation. 
  • High school diploma or equivalent and minimum of 1 semester of college coursework completed.
  • Must be a current enrolled student at Purdue University in West Lafayette or Indianapolis.
  • Knowledgeable in marketing, communication, management, journalism, public relations, event management or related field.
  • Solid knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud and Design Products (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects), Canva, Marq.
  • Experience with visual communications principles and best practices.
  • Customer service or event planning experience is a plus.
  • Ability to take initiative to research and learn new software
  • Self-motivated, organized and independent, yet comfortable to work in a team environment.
  • Willingness to learn and grow.
  • General knowledge of Purdue University, the College of Engineering preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.).

Education

Experience

Responsibilities:

Design and Creation:

  • Develop visual concepts for print and digital materials, including flyers, posters, social media, websites and presentations.
  • Utilize design software (Adobe Creative Cloud: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, Canva, Marq).
  • Adapt designs for different platforms and formats.
  • Prepare designs for print or online publication.
  • Assist Dean’s Office Communication team with development and execution of marketing campaigns, event promotions, etc. 
  • Present ideas to team.

Research and Trends:

  • Stay updated on current design trends, best practices and the Purdue brand.
  • Research and gather inspiration for design projects.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate closely with professional designers, the larger communication team, event organizers and other stakeholders to understand and carry out project requirements.
  • Communicate design ideas, receive feedback effectively and work efficiently.
  • Manage day-to-day tasks that assist with maintaining a fluid operation.
  • Exhibit professionalism, friendliness, diplomacy and tact in responding to faculty, staff, students and partners.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exhibit professional conduct when handling sensitive information.

File Management and Organization:

  • Maintain organized file structures and ensure proper file formats, naming, processes, as set by the team.
  • Excellent time management with the ability to shift between independent and collaborative work.
  • Attend in-person events, meetings, as needed.

  • Seek opportunities to expand design skills and overall knowledge.
  • Attend meetings, courses, training sessions to enhance design abilities, gain/share pertinent information, as needed.
