Associate Heating & Cooling Mechanic - Operations & Maintenance

This position could be filled as an Associate Heating & Cooling Mechanic or Heating & Cooling Mechanic. The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate.

The success candidate for this position will perform installation, preventative maintenance trouble shooting and repair of all associated refrigeration and heating/cooling equipment such as, but not limited to; gas and oil fired boilers, furnaces, stoves, ovens, incinerators, air conditioners, water coolers, refrigerators, freezers, cryostats and other temperature-controlled units, ice-makers, and all other types of refrigeration units, etc. Perform regular preventative maintenance, refrigerant record keeping in accordance with EPA standards and Indiana Code.  


  • Associate’s degree or Trade School Certification in Heating & Cooling, HVAC, Refrigeration or related field
  • One year of Heating and Cooling experience
  • In lieu of a degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience; high school diploma/GED with 3 years working experience in Heating & Cooling
  • Industrial, commercial and/or residential heating and cooling and refrigeration experience
  • EPA 608 universal certification 
  • Must read blueprints, schematics, manufacturer instructions and guidelines
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics and manufacturer instructions and guidelines
  • Knowledge of hand tools necessary to accomplish assigned tasks
  • Willingness to continue education as directed
  • Basic computer and mathematical skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills 
  • May require working in adverse weather conditions, confined spaces and heights
  • Must adhere to Purdue University safety policies, procedures and training
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 to 80 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally
  • A valid US or Canadian driver’s license


  • Three year of Heating and Cooling experience

  • Purdue will not sponsor an employment authorization for this position 
  • A Background Check will be required for employment in this position 
  • The hours for this position are Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Occasional overtime may be required
  • This position requires availability for 24-hour call-back 
  • FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for Overtime) 
  • Retirement Eligibility: Non-exempt Defined Contribution Plan
